Recent History
In 2000, an F2 tornado smashed through downtown, tearing many buildings into shreds and scrap metal. One of the hardest hit structures was Bank One Tower. The 'Plywood Skyscraper' and later 'Tin Can Tower' awaited demolition for several years, deemed as unsafe and too cost-prohibitive to revive. It has since been converted to upscale condominiums and officially renamed 'The Tower'.
When oil began to gush in West Texas, Fort Worth was at the center of the wheeling and dealing. In July 2007, Barnett Shale, much of which lies directly under this city, was being drilled into by natural gas companies paying individuals royalties.
